Who Predicted the End of the World in 2012, Nostradamus or the Mayans?
Who predicted the end of the world?
The short answer is that neither the Mayans nor Nostradamus predicted the end of the world in 2012 – at least, not exactly.
- The Mayans’ long count calendar ends in December of 2012, but that does not necessarily mean doom.
- Nostradamus has NO exact prediction that conclusively dates to 2012.
Now, the long answer is a bit more interesting.
The Mayan 2012 Calendar
The fact that the Mayan long count calendar ends in December of 2012 is no secret. This calendar spans over 5,000 years and its conclusion was of great importance to the Mayans. The end of this calendar meant the end of the age! However, the Mayan calendar itself does not indicate the end of the world, just the end of the age – with a new age beginning on the following day. There were even three previous ages. Granted, they all ended with some great event, but not the end of the world.
It was an archeologist by the name Michael Coe who (in 1966) first brought forth the idea of Armageddon occurring on this date – the completion of the Mayan 2012 calendar. Now, Coe is not just any archeologist – he is one of the greatest living experts on ancient Mayan culture. Furthermore, he has a doctorate in anthropology from Harvard and he worked for the CIA. I am only giving you this brief biography so that you would not merely dismiss him as a crack pot.

So, did the Mayans predict the end of the world in 2012?
No, but Dr. Michael Coe did study the ancient Mayan texts and it is his interpretation that there is a possibility that Armageddon would occur at the completion of the Mayan long count calendar in 2012.
Nostradamus and 2012
You must know that frankly Nostradamus predicted a whole bunch of stuff. Also, nothing of any significance ever happens without someone claiming that Nostradamus predicted it. I just want to make that part very clear here in the beginning.
However, there is a very interesting prediction of Nostradamus that does seem to give credence to the many people who combine his predictions with the 2012 date.
“After a great misery of mankind, an even greater approaches. The great cycle of the centuries renewed, it will rain blood, milk, famine, war, disease. In the sky will be seen a great fire dragging a trail of sparks.”
Before we go any farther, know this: this is the EXACT same prediction that was used before Y2K to show that Nostradamus predicted the end of the world in 2000. It seemed to make sense for them then too, but it did NOT happen.
So now this prediction (and many similar ones) has been attributed to the 2012 Mayan date. The reason is because what could be a greater meaning for “great cycle of the centuries renewed” than the ending of a 5,000 year old calendar? So, it seems to make some sense at least.
Furthermore, there has been almost a worldwide fear of an asteroid or comet striking the earth ever since it was demonstrated that this may have been what killed the dinosaurs… So, “in the sky will be seen a great fire dragging a trail sparks” has been translated to mean a comet or asteroid striking the earth. This passage has also been translated to mean a missile strike or nuclear war.
So, did Nostradamus predict the end of the world in 2012?
No, but some of his predictions may potentially be relevant… or not.

I found one more prediction of December 21,2012. It is mentioned in the last episode of “The X Files” as the day of the alien invasion. Must be the return of “Bolon Yokte’ K’uh” as the Mayans predicted. The depiction is on monument 6 from Tortuguero. Check it out and remember the truth will set you free.
I for one believe this isn’t true, how can anyone predict the world’s end? And all the predictions have been wrong so why should this one be any different plus its just a calander and your talking about people, when they got wiped out the world didn’t end plus they are not alive now so we can’t rly ask them ya know. We have so much tech, earth can only develop more, btw I’m 13 and. This whole end of world is stupid plus the earth is gonna be here for like billions of years and how many times have people predicted stuff? None of it happpened, not in 2011 2009( I think) 2000 nothing happened so don’t believe it plus the chance of getting hit by a comet is like 1 to a million chance, earth Aways has comets nearly hitting it, its a miss plus we could probably stop a small one and who knows if it will be a near hit(probs) anyway I was kindia scared but hearing all your facts and other articles I feel better and not scared cos I’m positive everything will be fine. Believe, young one. There certainly is something happening to this planet in the very near future. Read your bible and say your prayers. The hand of God is always upon this thing we know as life. It’s the end of the world as we know it.
I believe this is a big joke creating news for the news media to publish. I am not going to worry about it because if it truly is the end of the world, what can we do about it. Nothing!!! We might as well live life while we have it than worry about what might happen even though we have no proof that it is definitely coming true. I think we have other things that need taken care of instead of trying to change something that nobody even knows whether or not it is true. Yes, I agree the land is being depleted and people are building cities where wild life once lived. Whether people want to believe it or not, the wild life needs homes too and they need woods for protection and they need food. If they do not have this, we cannot survive either. What I see is the world going back to the old times of farming the land because the government has put so many regulations on stuff that it has put the price of everything to high to where nobody can afford to buy it. I plant a garden every year and I love it. The fruits and vegetables that you purchase in a store does not have the nutrients that come from the ground because they are not grown in the dirt. They are grown on cement in big greenhouses. Everyone would be better off if we quit relying on other people to make our food for us. So quit being lazy and try living off the land like it was intended. Quit relying on being able to purchase meal kits or prepared food. This kind of thing is the cause of why many people cannot cook these days. Everybody is worrying about being better than someone else. Why live your life like that? Why don’t you make yourself happy and enjoy your life instead of doing what everyone else wants you to do? What is this world coming to? Really, think about it.

Everything Jen says is absolutely true! That’s where cancer and all other diseases come from…eating the sh** they try to pass off as food in the stores, not to mention the crap that’s in our air and water. They take perfectly good food and strip it of all it’s nutrients and taste and then try to put it back in with artificial crap! Why not just leave it alone in the first place. I love having a vegetable garden in the summer bcuz I know it’s real food! Fact: Korea is threatening nuclear war, didn’t a comet just pass by us a few light years around Dec. 21, 2011?, half the world is already starving, the earth is unstable beneath us (earthquakes) probably because we have taken so much out of its makeup (oil etc.) that it is having a tough time staying together.
Reasoning:all of a sudden we have found a planet capable of sustaining life (forgot what’s called was in news last week), we have billionares, chineese, russian and usa scrambling to form compaines to get off this planet and using short jumbs and creating a moon station. The Us has just started the “100 space program”. We have area 51.
Conclusion: it’s the end of an era, we need to move on and it’s way over due. As for God being in control that’s why he gave us “free will”. Are we/you so vain that you believe humans on earth are His only creation? those in the know, know we have depleted this world and it’s time to reach out to other worlds and civilizations and give this planet time to rejuvanate.

I believe that regarding 2012 as a year when something out of the ordinary will take place adds a sense of drama to life in the present. Perhaps the end of the world does not mean the end of the physical world, but the end of perspective and activity as we now know it and the beginning of something new that is more accurate and beneficial. Some people need to get out of their scientific/see it to believe it mind set and realize that Jesus will return one day. What do you expect him to do with you? Completely with James on this one. The idea of a benevolent personified super-power with the ability to create, change and destroy absolutely everything is completely ridiculous, especially one who’s proof lies within a 2000 year old story book.
And for this idea of God, also if you think about the appendix, it was used primarily to digest plants and such, and if you were to be merely walking around centuries ago, with no real in-depth knowledge of the growth of wildlife around you, do you not find is plausible that a commonly found edible would have been magic mushrooms? Of which people would consider to be mushrooms like any other. Think about what’s more logical, someone parting a whole sea perfectly, using nothing but their hands and ‘God’s help’, charging through the middle with masses of escapees, and conveniently closing it back up again just in time to stop the enemy, OR, someone hallucinated pretty bad after eating a mushroom.. I know my decision.
He made the world for us. We’re supposed to be taking care of it! His only mistake was depending on us to do that!

I believe u are right in some of this. Maybe we’re gonna get punished for those who treat our world like its dirt. I don’t think god or. Whoever is above us appreciates the pollution and the cancer sticks we feed each other all because businesses wanna make more money. Maybe instead of caring for other country’s giving them food and what not the we’d have money for our selfs that’s why we’re so in debt. We say it is raining “cats and dogs,” but we don’t actually mean we are dodging falling chihuahuas. I am pretty sure you cannot take much of what Nostradamus says literally. Then again, what could happen to make the rain appear like milk?

My concern with Nostrodamus is not his writings, but the amount of variance in the interpretation. I believe there are those that suggest that Nostro even predicted the demise of the twin towers in America….for those that state this surely it makes them an accessary to and after the fact thus technically punishable by the law? (just a thought)

Harold, I am VERY familar with the Mayan cycles and calender and have been from and most of the coast where you are ,receiving? these forthcomings in which you base, what you keep NOT GETTING is the time and cycle too read these calenders. I have seen the April light which through PURE smarts and technology is alined for a 2ooo mile beam from one ruin too the other. These are gifts, NOT mathamatical gobbldigook that you keep trying to come close and NO WHERE NEAR Nasradamus’s fortelling. He even andmited fault BEFORE the numbers where run. I tell you something in the past, many people said the world was ending. They didn’t have no base to what they were saying, in other worlds there was nothing happening in the heavens. Now we have a few things happening in the heavens, we have an annular eclipse on may 20 2012. We know eclipses promote earthquakes. We also moving in the center of the milky way. we might encounter the black hole. I suggest all of you find out what is there in the black hole. Lately we have seen more asteroid activities, the moon have been pounded in the other side with asteroids. are we getting closer to the black hole? I tell you this if it wasn’t for nostradamus or the mayas we wouldn’t be able to check into this things. Some 10,000 years ago, the earth tilted with a mega quake causing thousands of tsunamis and the all continent of atlantic got submerged in water. But with all of this said let’s get a good relation with God so, our ascension wether it is spiritually or physically goes smooth into the fifth dimension, on may 20th 2012 we are supposed to enter the fifth dimension let’s hope the transition is smooth. I agree, but I also believe that there are horrible things coming our way by the end of this year, our country is in the hole now, and thousands of people are losing their jobs all over the world I I believe world will continue but millions of people will die, think about it look at our country everything that’s happened now, there is no more love no more respect people believe that the more money they have the more they need to be happier than that is not true, people have just forgotten about God, and that is why they predicted the world will end in 2 2012 but it will not end it’s the people that will end, buy so many diseases and the 1 of them is cancer, the climbing starting to change all over the world and people still don’t see it. but I do believe a lot in the prediction, just look at the clouds look at how they are changing color, may god help us all because harbaugh things will come by the end of this year.what they predicted before the end of this year somethings will happen, and it doesn’t look good how to be leavin the prophecy and what has been said thousands of years ago.
