December 21st 2012 – a date that is well known globally. Several hundred years ago, the Ancient Mayans predicted the apocalypse on this very date. With their 5,125 year old calendar resetting itself to 0.0.0.0. on this date, many are preparing for the worst. However, how legit is the prophecy of the Mayans? Here are the top ten reasons why the world will not end in 2012:
1. The Earth would run out of resources and energy.
There is no danger of energy depletion for the Earth. The available energy is self generating, continuous and unlimited. Furthermore, there is no chance of the universe enclosing, retracting and finally exploding resulting in destruction on December 21st 2012. This scenario is expected in 500 billion years. I am pretty sure our generation would have passed on by then.
2. There is a possibility of the earth coming to an end in 2012.
However, truthfully there is also a probability of the end being today, tomorrow or 5000 years from now. There is no proper method of finding out when the apocalypse will take place. These prophecies are only based on assumptions and predictions with no scientific proof.
3. The Mayan culture disappeared long before their calendar ended.
The Maya may have an been advanced race in astrology and mathematics; however, they were not so proficient in their predictions. They might have foretold the end of life in the year 2012, but they could not predict the disappearance and demise of their own culture.
4. The Mayan Calendar resets itself to 0.0.0.0.
Just as the calendar in your house ends after December 31st, so does the Mayan calendar. This does not mean that the Earth comes to an end with your calendar does it? The end of the Mayan calendar just means that the Mayan long-count period will end and another one would begin; just as your new calendar for the year would.
5. According to scientists, the Earth is going to go through a magnetic polar switch quite soon.
This assumption is predicted to cause utter chaos and destruction, which will possibly lead to the extinction of life. However, scientists have found out that the Earth has faced this issue 380, 000 years ago. Life clearly did manage to pass this problem, so it is likely we are to survive through it again.
6. Nostradamus predicted the end to be as a result of an asteroid smashing into the Earth.
Recently, an asteroid has been spotted and found its way into news. The 900-foot wide asteroid, named Apophis, is believed to make its next close approach soon…in 2029! Even then, the collision probability has been downgraded to 1 in 250, 000 chance. There is another possibility of an uncharted asteroid or comet appearing out of the blue at any time; however, Earth-killing impacts have been millions of years apart. It is pretty obvious that our generation would no longer be in the picture in the next million years.
7. One of the most popular issues brought up by scientists is the increase in the number of solar flares. This problem would lead to satellites melting and eventually lead to a global catastrophe.
This is quite a load of rubbish as the sun goes though a well-documented 11-year sunspot cycle which is driven by its magnetic field. Although the next cycle is assumed to be 30 to 50 percent stronger than the last peak and is predicted to be in the year 2012, it is certainly not the highest peak recorded.
8. The planets will align in a way that impacts the Earth
To date there is no possibility of a planetary alignment for the next few decades. In addition, Earth will not cross a galactic plane in the year 2012. If this planetary alignment was to take place, scientists have found that their effects upon the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and the Sun does align with approximately the center of the Milky Way Galaxy; nevertheless, there has been no sign of impact or consequence due to this process.
9. The origin of the Armageddon prediction in the year 2012 began with the story of Planet Nibiru smashing into the Earth.
A supposed planet discovered by the Sumerian, the theory of the Earth being destroyed in 2012 began with the prophecy the planet Nibiru clashing with the earth. Although initially predicted for May 2003, the doomsday date was postponed to December 2012 as nothing obviously happened. Ironically, both tales were linked to one of the cycles in the Ancient Mayan calendar that ends in 2012. This is an internet hoax! Amongst many other fibs; if a planet, asteroid or comet was heading towards the earth, astronomers would be definitely keeping track of them. Astronomers have found a dwarf planet similar to the size of Pluto known as Eris; however, this planet will remain in the outer solar system. The closest Eris can come in proximity with the Earth is 4 billion miles, which I believe is quite a lot of distance.
10. Finally, if the Armageddon is predicted to be on December 21st 2012, then why is my car warranty dated to May 2013?
There are many reasons the world will not end in 2012. Many of the predictions out there appear to be hoaxes as stated earlier. With the internet, it is easy to make up a bunch of rubbish and pass it around. Do not be fooled into these lame prophecies as it would only bring you worry. The Mayans did not predict the end of their calendar due to death and destruction on the Earth; instead they assumed a period of tribulation or spiritual change. Death and disaster is a daily activity in life. So live each day as the last, because the end of time cannot be predicted.

The sun is becoming more and more active, with solar flares becoming more and more likely to hit our atmosphere. This creates a disturbance in the layers of our atmosphere meaning that technology, such as mobile phones and radios wouldnt work as the electromagnetic waves would not pass through the atmosphere, or be drflrcted, in the ways we areused to. This means al this technology would be redundant spreading wide spred panic, possibly leading to the destruction of the human race as we wouldnt be able to cope with out technology
Just like to point out, the world will not deffinatley end, but irrevocably change. The Mayans believed that there had already been 3 stages to the world and we are currently in the 4th. On the 21st of December we will just enter annother phase of the world. It could be that some life changing scientific discovery is made on this date that changes the world as we know it, not neccaserly destroying it…
hopefully the life changing scientific discovery is a cure to cancer

Well i am not saying i beleive in god but then again everyone here who has written somting has their own point.I mean some people believe in god because it is their religion and there are some people who turn to him in fear.To tell you the truth I am just 12 years old but i wont stop living or do anything obnoxious just because of someone else. I dont beleive the world is going to end right now. Everyday someone asks a question and some are a” What if ” question. Those kind of questions aren’t really answered until it has finally happened. Not to freak anyone out but IF the world domination is near why has every other prediction been wrong does anyone have evidence to proove this? And if it has to do with religion what is anyone supposed to say to people who dont beleive or even have a religion. Unfortunetly sometimes people can get into arguments and cause chaos on the given date of a spoken disaster which makes me say why deal more damage than what needs to be done? My only concern is my son is so sick and worried because he will turn 21 on 21-12-21 and thinks that now there will be no where to go to, to get drunk legally..just kidding I respect everyones, theories all have some sense. I believe in God, Creator of all we see. So I can say for myself and none other – that I do not fear death. So I don’t fear any predictions of the world ending. This web sites proves to me that so many obviously do. I love that quote in the movie “When the earth stood still” where the great thinker of the time says “its not until humanity is faced with its own demise that we are capable of change” I have no comment on the matter just liked the quote.

To help clarfy the concerns with the issue of 2012; What the date means on the Mayan calendar is the end of the 12th cycle and thus the 13th begins, to put it in simple terms. With that said, what the REAL concern should be is the pole shifts, being that also at around the same time the sun’s solar flares will reach their peak strenght. And by the way, what the pole shifts will do is just that…just shift…then go back to normal, not flip the earth and make the east and west change. During this pole shift there may power grid problems, which in turn will shut down satelite transmissions for an unknown period. Also the earth’s magnetic field will be off until this shift completes it’s cycle. Earth’s magnetic field are our only protection against the more powerful solar flares, with our so called shields down we are open to attack by our own sun, not to mention a nuke attack from within because of the satelites being down. All of this could culminate this year. By the way, these are all scientific fact, not fiction. Just check it out for yourself. FYI…
Your “facts” are a little off. The satalite transmissions have nothing to do with the power grid. As for the flares and the polar shift, NASA just released 4 studies and multiple statements that even if both happen simultaneously, the impact on earth would be negligble. So not to worry about a nuke attack, weve got that under control.

There are so many different theories about the world ending, well unfortunatley the world will end, most likely not in 2012 but sometime in the future thats the way things are, everything will at some stage go back to where it came from, as everything in the universe is connected because it all came from something that was smaller than a speck of dust, to something that is unmeasureable by any instruments we have. Something i heard about the mayan calander is that it is the start of the 3rd equinox, 1st equinox being day and night, 2nd equinox being the seasons and the earth going round the sun, 3rd equinox being the solar system moving around the galaxy and on the 21st december 2012 that cylce starts again. I think that people have just gone crazy with the idea the world is going to end, so people look back in time and see the drawings and artifacts or writings of past civilizations and see these things that they can’t explain for the time period but why not why couldnt there have been a previous civilization that was far superioror to any other and had machines, flying vehicles, motorised ships, i reckon reading up on somebody called quetzalcoatl, a jesus like character who had been seen all around the world, there are many other names for this person but basically all mean the same thing feathered serpeant. I dont’t know, people can take up there own onlook but i don’t believe it will end people just look into things far too much, i mean the nostradamus thing, the drawing of the twin towers, they were castles in his drawing and they where on fire, i could draw a horse with a mounted laser cannon on its head and if somebody did that in the future would i be looked upon as a physcic? some of the stories and theories are really fun though it makes some great reading.

Hm i came across this completely by accident searching for Global Warming information lol. Where do i begin with the end of the world topic besides me having countless amounts of dreams about it since i was a little girl(im now in college),from it involving aliens to seeing places that ive been to and places i haven’t been flooded with earthquakes and tornados sucking everything away, and now a new element ive dreamed with it is black holes. I love when i hear and read articles about the world not ending because it seriously is the only thing that scares me(along with being old and dying before my time). I try not to pay any attention to this thing but it is hard when today’s topics circle around it like flies with people already marking this year for destruction. I don’t know when the world will end nor do i how it will but i do know that natural disasters will keep occurring and even more so ones that we humans cause. Global Warming will eventually cause more damages and changes to our planet along with the world ending. The only thing is that the human race can slow that process down a bit more since it is not something that one can completely stop, it has been occurring since the last ice age and will not change but with the help of not polluting so much and recycling more the melting of ice sheets in Antarctica will not be as fast along with drastic melting in other areas like Alaska that will cause the levels of the ocean to rise just enough to flood and even wipe out states like California, Louisiana, and any other states close to sea level. People don’t understand that global warming is not just something that makes the planet hot it also affects weather to causing more changes with areas that may have never seen these sorts of weather changes before. Just recently earthquake warnings and tornado warnings have been given in areas that have not seen it in decades or even hundreds of years with one example being the very state i live in. We had a tornado warning not to long ago and anyone that lives where i do knows that we never get weather like that and if we did well we would all be pretty dead because our houses are not built for that type of disaster. Unlike the predictions that people have made before our time that may or hopefully may not come true one thing for certain is that global warming seems to be a more nearing event then anything else. It is a shame that people take the time to build new high tech phones and gizmos and amazing new ipods that could maybe one day just read your mind and pick your fav rock song without having to move an inch but not much advances have been made to actually help our planet minus a hybrid car that is to expensive so most people do not chose to even by it. I feel that when more changes happen including the change to or maps that we have all been so familiar with happen is the only time people will truly care about what is going on with the planet we live on. Though everyone thinks we humans are strong and smart with all our technology we are also very stubborn and will not budge until it is close to being to late when our little classroom globe figures will have to be remade. We humans cause destructive things like building bombs that can wipe out life in any area to tearing down rainforests just to make money and maybe even expand the land to build things on it(which is completely stupid because once they do that the land is not fertile anymore and the soil is to weak and unstable to even put a small corner store on.) but maybe one thing about us all can change, i think we should all give back to our planet and hopefully slow the process down of more natural disasters and states disappearing. I apologize for this post being mega long its just something i am passionate about and am in college studying to be a science major, more specifically maybe even becoming a geologist. I know this post kind of went off topic but to me global warming is and will keep occurring before a definite date that the world will end on and that people need to pay attention to the things that they can actually try and change. Holy cow… you’re so right. so I’m not quite as familiar on the topic as you are, but I like to do research. I am very terrified of what is to come in December of this year. So many theories and predictions and scientific dates of the galaxy alignment; it’s all so scary! I absolutely love the point you made about how humans have made so many phenomenal technologies, yet they do nothing for our planet. If we can create all these futuristic devices, why can’t we create something to fix such a huge problem as global warming?! I hope at some point we all get a wake up call and start doing things that really matter to our planet and will help us with more than being able to find our favorite song… I just hope when we do get that wake up call… it’s not too late

If this article was read you’d see there were different assumptions some that were wrong and dates were changed because nothing happened. I’ve noticed the change but it doesn’t mean that when the worlds ends it’ll be 12 12 12. I bet all the people who agree on this stuff are the same people acting stupid when the year 2000 hit. But everyone says “Ohhh, the world isn’t gonna end; it will happen sometime far in the future.” But isn’t that what they’re all going to continue to say in the future anyways? We don’t know. No one knows. But it’s just far too coincidental for all of these catastrophic events to be predicted to occur next month. I agree with you all, but it all seems slightly fishy to me, however it definitely sounds probable. And I’m extremely scared for what’s to come.
Yes, but it wasnt actually the year 2000 as the AD calendar dosent exactly match that of the yera of jesus’s birth. In addition the date given to jesus’s birth was only set to th 25th of december to match the Pagan festival. Some scientists believe that the year 2000 AD is this year and it is possible that the real date of jesus’s birth was the 21st of december…
Well i don’t believe a bunch of people got together and decided to make a story of the end of the world, but have you never heard the same old story in different ways but with the same premise… Just like folk tales that get passed on through the generations… the basics stay the same but different cultures put there own spin on things… this very well could be just another tale that got passed around… also if they knew this and it was set in stone (lol) and we use a lot of the things they made wouldn’t we be able to prove it now… and wouldn’t they have seen the end of there culture… idk just something to ponder on i guess…

The most probable disaster that will occur will be the up and coming pole shift this will infact move all you americans to england lets say or vice versa humanity will not survive this but as we did of the becoming from the “ice age” which infact was made by a pole shift not “the big bang” civilisation will return in some sense.

I beg to differ, the world will never end ( as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end) and not everyone is gonna die. In the day of judgement everyone will face their judgement on how they lived thier life on earth and how they carried out the laws of the Amighty. This has nothing to do with the predictions of the Mayans or anyone else for that fact ( for no one knows the day or the hour). We must therefore deal the global crisis and the situations that we face on a day to day basis. Personally i’m not worried about what may or may not happen on 12/21/12, the idea is to live life right and let The Creator do his will.
If you believe in God then you know that nobody knows when the world is going to end.. I can run my truck on oil I squeeze from an ear of corn but somehow people believe that the Earth needed millions of years to squeeze the oil from the dinosaurs? And ditto on diamonds and precious gems as well. We can squeeze a lump of coal in a laboratory but the Earth can’t do it that fast….yeah right!! By the way where did that oil go from the BP spill? There have been about 514 leap years since Caesar created it in 45 BC. Without the extra day every 4 years, it would already be August 2013. The Mayan calendar did not account for Leap year….
So, technically the world would have ended 7-8 months ago.

First, the Mayan Calendar more accurately calculated the earth’s rotation and did not need leap years. They did not use the Gregorian calendar. They used… wait for it… the MAYAN calendar. The Gregorian calendar was instituted by Pope Gregory in the 16th century and replaced the Julian calender instituted (not created) by Julius Caesar. Neither the Julian nor the Gregorian calendars have any effect on the Mayan calendar.
Second, the calendars were correlated relatively recently and therefore your dumbass 45 BC date has absolutely no relevancy.
Third, the GMT Correlation (named for the three scientists that devised it) takes into account all leap years since the correlation date. Look it up.

I ran across this article because a friend of mine told me not to have a baby until after Dec 21st. I just wanted to show her that there isn’t necessarily any truth in these predictions and hopefully it showed her just that. Don’t get me wrong, I believe soon enough our current civilization will collapse, maybe it will be tomorrow or Dec 21st or maybe, if I’m lucky, on my birthday!
If I prepare for anything, I’ll prepare for natural disasters and the collapse of our economy. Preparing myself to survive as the original inhabitants of this planet once did. I don’t believe anyone knows when this will happen, I do believe that cultures who have survived on this world for thousands of years would have some way of making “guesses” at things that are to come, increased natural disasters, etc. It’s part of the world going through the cycles it has gone through previously.
Stay with me, I’m not trying to contradict myself here, so hopefully I’m not. I am not religious, nor do I hold any kind of religious beliefs. After reading some of the comments that have been posted here I find it interesting and I guess slightly amusing that people would trade one historical document for another. If you don’t believe the predictions of the Mayans, why would you believe the predictions of individuals who claimed to be writing the words of God. The Bible is, in that way, no more a reliable source of information than anyone else who makes predictions.
Just because someone wrote it and you believe it, doesn’t mean it’s necessarily true or that everyone else should agree with you and believe what you believe.
(I apologize for any politically incorrect ideas I may have stated, but it’s sad that we live in a time when everyone is offended by anything someone else say.)

During a catastrofic event humans will help each other, it is in our souls or genes if you prefer. Geologically we have no evidence that anything major will occur, earthquakes, volcanos all that stuff has been taking place for billions of years on a regular basis. Earth, stars, plants and yes humans are all tied together the sun shines on all of us, good or bad. In physics matter can not be destroyed it only changes phases. So no worries, try to be as positive as life allows, have more parties and smile if you can.

I really agree with what you have posted here. I find that I don’t believe the world itself will come to an end any time soon, but I find myself preparing and readying for the time when the human races brings about the collapse of its own civilization. The actions that we have taken over the years, the decisions we make and our governments make along with a lot of other factors, I definitely think we will be our own downfall.
This is when survival of the fittest comes into play – You need to know how to survive without relying on other individuals to create things for you. Live off the land and with the land, without destroying the land. That’s not true. Only the Mayans have anything to do with 2012. Everything else (Nostradamus, Iching, etc) that was all added after to take advantage of the date. NASA has a solar maximum warning for 2012, but that isn’t actually a prediction so much as a weather forecast.

People should be prepared for ANY natural disaster. Look what happened in Haiti. Those people didn’t even have flashlights, let alone generators, batteries, or extra food. I ALWAYS have at least a three-month supply of non-perishable food, a couple of kerosene heaters (and 50 gallons of kerosene), lots of bottled water, two twelve-volt deep cycle gel-cell batteries, and a small generator just in case. That stuff didn’t cost anymore than a few cases of beer. What is more important–beer or survival?
You see it in the news all the time. People suffering after a natural disaster because they never bothered to stock up on any essentials, just in case. If the food is stuff you’d eat anyway, it won’t go to waste even if there isn’t a disaster. Look at the “Best Before Date” on the bottom of the cans of food, and rotate it before the dates expire. Or donate it to a food bank.
I don’t believe that 2012 will be the end of the world. However; natural disasters, like earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, twisters, and so on, can happen at any time for any reason. The people who prepare for those kind of disasters won’t be sitting in their homes, in the dark and the cold, with no food.
It’s only common sense.

As a history teacher, I get questions from students about 2012 whenever we get to the unit on the Maya. I have been collecting websites to recommend, and this by far is my favorite. I am always amazed by the disinformation and misinformation people perpetuate, especially considering the vast wealth of resources we now have. Unfortunately, one of the casualties of immediate satisfaction in the age of seemingly unlimited technology is laziness of the mind. As you have witnessed, people do not actually read articles before they form opinions, and they proofread even less. The spelling (or lack thereof) is a mixture of ignorance and carelessness. They truly do not care. I have high school students who argue that spelling and grammar rules are irrelevant, and plagiarism rules are just intellectual greed. I wish I had the answers to our real problems…
Originally I created this website as an internet marketing experiment. They said to pick a topic you enjoy… so I went with this one. It was fun and I truly have always been interested in the mysteries of the ancient Maya.

The Chicago Cubs have not won a World Series. If the Cubs should win the big one next fall I will worry but . . . they have secured our existence with a culture that glorifies losing as ‘loveable’ so I think we’re okay.
Seriously, I personally don’t waste a lot of time worrying about unknown and sudden catastrophes when we have enough clear & present dangers to worry about. The debt bomb, energy crises, and great depression 2.0 all seem inescapable right now and not 1 in 100 seem to know life is about to change dramatically. I have always known a world in which the simple flick of a switch, turn of a knob, or push of a lever results in instant light, water, or heat for my home. Must of us also have been able to take for granted neat stacks of produce and over-abundant food stocks on almost every street corner. If you’re much under sixty-five you are probably going to see a world where the assumptions we cling to are going to be a thing of the past.
Prepare your house, so to speak. Put your money in things that are lasting and less vulnerable to financial Armageddon. Devise a plan to survive in a world where law and order may disappear in stretches, or entirely. I fear we are all going to experience the ancient Chinese curse of living in ‘interesting times’. Pray a lot. And, if there should happen to be a victory parade down Michigan Avenue next fall, be very afraid.

What mayan and i Ching predicted is simple, it is not end of the world. But there willl be huge catastrope will happen in 2012. That is quite a possible. An earth quake / Tsunami or even some asteriods will collide with earth. It is not the end of the world. May be half of the population will vanish(God forbidden).

Aravind, claiming an earthquake or a tsunami is going to happen this year is a bullet-proof prediction, it will happen. It is kind of like going up to a person and “predict” they have once lost an object they could have sworn they knew were it was. It’s just so general that it is self-fullfilling.
That is not what self-fulfilling means. Self-fulfilling means that you believe something is true so much that you take steps to bring it about both consciously and self-consciously. Call a child a loser enough times and they will choose a loser’s path time and again.
The Mayans were around when the pyramids were created. Pyramids are made with block that have 90° angles. In all the time that pyramids have existed they have only sunk 0.25 of an inch. Even new buildings have a sink of 4″ at best over a 50 year time period. We have even found perfect circles that look like they have been melted in. Pyramids are at such a great size and weight that scientists have said they can generate there own power. Lets stop beating around the bush no humans had the possible thinking power to build the pyramids, infact I don;t think they have the motivation.

He said on Dec 21 2012 when the calendar ends, the world will be shaken back to health from the all the sickness that was created on it over time, and as the world shakes everything will be strong again and new and healthy, some will die and some will survive to live in the new era. and by new er he said no tech and no power nothing we will live like the old days. Our planet goes through periodic heating and cooling periods. I believe that the crazy weather is just a side effect of our planet going through a natural “Warming” stage. I wouldn’t say an ancient civilization’s doomsday prediction has any direct correlation to our crazy weather. Not to mention, I do not believe that is it mentioned anywhere that these ancient people were astute meteorologists.

I am scared, but this website has assured me, and helped me feel better. Nobody can predit the future, I once tried, and I was very close, but it didn’t happen the way I pictured it in my mind. We absolutely cant predict what the earth will throw our way. Catastrophes happen, they always have and always will. Prophets use their vivid imaginations and creativity to think up possible disasters of the future, this isn’t saying they knew what would happen, but what could happen. We as a society should maybe look at predictions made not in negative light such as some particular disaster is going cripple man, but in a positive light of we will keep marching forward because we are prepared for the “what if’s” that could happen. No gravity would not occur seeing it is not because if the magnetic poles that we have gravity. I’m not so sure. I have been worried about this for at least 10 plus years now. I have contemplated suicide on many occasions and have been institutionalized as a result. I was raised a Jehovah’s Witness but have in disbelief for about 13 years of their teachings. I have read a lot of books and articles about this topic. And from what I gather we CAN NOT trust our government especially in recent times. Things are just too easy here in this country and something to think about, why would our government inform us??? To cause world wide chaos and panic??? No. They wouldn’t tell us. We are in the dark until it happens. Someone knows something. And you can look it up. There are many “elite” who have been preparing for quite some time for this date. Also what is with the comet Elinin and Nostradamus’ prediction kinda eerie if you read up about it. Its also a bit weird that normally theres a big hype to watch any comet that passes by but NASA seem to be keeping hush about Elinin saying that its not a big deal. 2. The reason you are only hearing vague whispers about the Comet Elinin is because… it’s a crock of shit! There is no Comet Elinin – never was. It is just another Internet hoax tied to the Mayan calendar hoping to garner some legitimacy.
3. Remember that you can pretty much translate the words of Nostradamus to mean just about anything. Anything at all. Nostradamus has NO predictions regarding 2012. None. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Nada. (Although I do think the “circle run round” quatrain is cool.) Again, people like to tie Nostradamus to everything.

I think that we are all giving the recent natural disasters entirely too much credit. Keep in mind, that we are all plugged into news and world happenings more than ever before- via cell phones, internet, constant social media updates, ect. Looking at the FACTS on natural disaster tracking websites, the earth often goes through periods of natural disasters, and we really arent seeing many more than “normal”. Isnt it possible that we are all just able to hear about them more often and faster with our modern technology? Havent we been saying “California is going to fall into the ocean any day now with the next earthquake!” for the past 20 years?

Otherwise, yeah, you make a valid point. Could it all be that natural disasters are on everyone’s mind? At least a little bit.
This is an excellent observation, and one I agree with. Completely. The natural disasters do seem a bit… overwhelming. But you can’t let them get to you. For two reasons:
A. – Bigger disasters have happened before. If you’re going to base the end of the world solely on a natural disaster, wouldn’t it be on the gi-huge one? Every disaster that has happened within the past X years is still trumped by a bigger version of that same disaster sixty or whatever years ago.
B. – What you said. We are much more connected now. Even in high school, when internet was around, we really didn’t use it much for anything else other than Myspace or Xanga. And our smartphones had snake on them. We live in a much more connected world; a media world. I recently read an article published by a science magazine that read there haven’t been any more earthquakes than normal–it’s just that before you never really heard of them, and now you access to the stories on your phone, Facebook, etc. It’s all readily available. Right there.
Nothing like living through a natural disaster to open your eyes to how pitiful AND how amazing the human race can be…maybe the world won’t ‘end’ but instead we’ll get the wake up call we need to treat eachother better.

Not sure if 2012 will end everything as we see today, though I do believe some sort of breakthrough will be necessary soon due to the chaos at present…riots, global military conflicts, stock market gambling, waste of natural resources. How can you say no one can tell when the world is going to end but then give a date or a year that it’s not????
I can tell you how i feel about this, i felt like ok if its meant to be we will all die. and didnt really ignore it, but felt perhaps if its to happen it will, and somehow things will be ok in the end.
But something tonight struck me in a weird way, life is a gift and years ago i didnt really feel that way in the lowest part of my life.
Today i have a four year old that is my love of my life, id do anything for her. To think she will only have 5 years of life to experience? i trust god to know what his plans for all of us are. No matter who your god is, or what you believe, have faith in that.
I can promise you and anyone else i come across in my path if this should ever happen to our race, i would dearly hope everyone else who keeps their sanity throughout this, would help another human being out. dont just make it all about yourself and surviving, who wants to be on a planet alone? the main reasons i would want survival is my lovedones to be with them no matter what. that encludes the people ive collected over the years as friends.
i dont know what will happen in 2012, but i will live today as though there is no tomorrow.
i do agree with the propaganda and ripoffs if 2012 were going to happen, why the hell would any website want to SELL you packaged foods that last for thirty years, why sell it? money wont be of any good. your food will be the most expensive items to bargain with. that is what kills me..

A very good article both this one and the top 5 reasons why the world will end. I may look into some of the reasons put forward in both to broaden my knowledge in the subject. Ancient cultures like this sure sound interesting.
My personal belief is that obviously the world will end, but very unlikely that it will end in 2012. I would also ask that if someone is going to direct us to another cultures scripture (including the bible) can they please quote the specific writting that tells of when the world will end and explain how conclussive this reallt is, thank you

Just because its written does not make true or even credible. The bible does not say anything about when the world will end. Furthermore any bible prophecy that has come true has done so hundreds of times. Just like the predictions of Nostradamus the bible has very vague predictions that are virtually guaranteed to come too pass.

No, not a scientist. Just a writer. I was interested in the topic and just started writing about it. I think the fact that I am still interested is why the site is so successful.
There are a few things missing from the general understandings of Mayan ‘predications’ about the apocalypse. First, the dots and bar calendar they used was not something they had invented or even improved upon. They inherited this piece of mathematical masterpiece from the Olmecs. This explains why Mayans, who are not particularly renowmned for their varied achievements of the new world, possessed such an advanced mathematical system for various astronomical and celestial calculations.
Little is known about the Olmecs – apart from the facts that they were advanced and inherited tremendous knowledge from their predecessors of antiquity and that they invented/used/inherited wheels (if only evident in clay toys).
The Mayan or rather Olmec calendar is mathematically progressive incorporating usage of ’0′ way before it was supposedly ‘discovered’. It talks about the end of 5th cycle of human race or the death of 5th Sun with the trascripts quoting 4 such ends in the anitquity. This may not be accurate, but Mayans and further Aztecs did take these cycles very seriously and as their traditions depict, to please the now-old Sun, human sacrifice was a common tradition followed by these cultures. Why and how they vanished, maybe each one was sacrificed to elongate this lifetime of the 5th Sun, maybe some migrated to other parts of the world – we don’t know. What we do know is our ancestors were no primitive men and with such advanced knowledge, they showed a remarkable seriousness to their inherited beliefs and with a some sound sense of reason continued this through their generations.
Don’t get me wrong, I am no advocate of 2012 cataclysm. I know the end predicted is more on a symbolic side and argued to be related to some sort of spiritual upheaval of humans but whatever it is, I want to witness this transformation or it would be a major disappointment on December 24th breakfast table.
PS: The date predicted in the calendar is 23rd December 2012 (not 21st)
There is no evidence that the date is the 23rd as opposed to the 21st.
While no one can predict the future, unless it is given from above, it does not mean that something will not happen just because people think it cannot happen to me. Or it can not happen in my lifetime.
While no one wishes for a global catastrophic event to occur; we cannot know that it will not occur any more than we can know that it will. That we cannot predict the future also means we cannot know what lies ahead.
As for a possible global catastrphy, there is the super volcano under yellowstone national park, which geologists have found out blows about every sixty thousand years, and when have they worked out the last time it blew, yes, about sixty thousand years. Not only will half of a continent be obliterated, its dust cloud would globally cause a cooling by blocking out the sunlight.
Well, that is what some would lead us to believe.
Anyway if something were to happen, no point worrying about it, for that is not going to change anything.

I’m afraid I do believe that 2012 will be a tumultuous year for all of us… because we’ll all be freaking out about an end of a cycle!

I doubt the world will end but there is a good chance that you will die. Billions will over the next year and a half or so will die. Did you read how we find out that the sun is emitting an unknown particle that effects all matter on earth? Seems like every week there is something new that is points to our destruction. I suggest you start reading Buddhist texts. You will not become enlightened in this lifetime but at least you will start on the road to enlightenment which you can expand upon on your next life and the next and the next. Science is now confirming many of the things the Buddha expounded upon over 2500 years ago are true. The more you read of the texts the more it will be obvious to you that the Buddha had an incredible knowledge into the inner workings of the mind. Learn the 4 noble truths, the eightfold path, and how to meditate begin the quest. You have nothing to lose by at least doing a real search into this subject. Last I heard Buddha was not a neurologist. Everything Is subjective… If I told you I prophesised that you will die from a flying Kamikazi Llama attack, the only thing that would be different is that you’d develop a fear of looking up. You guys are doubting the Mayians. These guys obviously had someone or something tell them about the future, they didn’t predict anything. All they did was write it all down. They were well educated as well. They have predicted many things that have occurred. That isn’t no coincidence. You guys have to face reality, we werent just put on this planet for no reason. The majority of the world doesn’t even bother thinking outside the world of going to work and coming home to there families. The thing is, we don’t really know that much about the Mayans. We don’t know what the end of the calendar represented for them. Mayans were not likely believers of the end of the world. Heck we don’t even know how they disappear. Although I agree with you the majority of the world doesn’t bother thinking outside the world, but with the current situation, why would they? They have more important stuff to worry about than this(studying, working or getting a job, sustaining ur family, etc.). People come here to look for cool and interesting information only, since the author of this blog has not stated that he believes/supports any idea concerning the end of the world. Hi everyone, I really couldn’t sleep for a long period, since I read about this Maya and the other predictions for the 2012 year. You wont believe but even my dreams are full of tsunamies, earthequakes, and a lot of kind of possible disasters that could happen to our earth. I just can get it out of my head. Not becouse I am scared for myself, I think all the time what will happent to our kids…what will we do? It really hearts. Now reading this article I reached to releaf myself a little bit(30 %). But one thing it is true. We are contributing a lot to destroy our wonderful plannet.

before humans made up the calender system, or any system to record time going by, it was just the cycle of the planets around the sun right? so how can they say that on 12-21-2012, a date that clearly sounds chosen for its random alternating 1′s & 2′s and which sounds catchy indeed, is the end of the world? before humans, there were no dates, no months, no years. its a made up system to give each day a title. and they are blowing up 12-21-12 like the numbers mean the end of the world, in reality it is just another cycle of earth around the sun like all the cycles that have been going on for a long, long LONG time. humans havent been around nearly as long as the earth, weve only been here for 2011 years, which is approx. 733735 cycles the earth has made around the sun and only .0163% of the earths life so far(approx. 4.5 billion years), why do humans get so paranoid and give this earth an expiration date? we simply arent wise enough to say something like that about this earth that has been pretty stable for a LONG LONG time. also, why is it that the planet with humans will expire, but the planets without humans are perfectly fine and not worried about? i havent heard of the end of mercury, or venus, which would be more likely to be hit by a solar flare than the earth, dont you think? i certainly do. so now lets really think about the real cause about this exaggerated so called “end of the world.”

1. The year is indeed 2011, but that doesn’t mean humans have only existed for 2011 years. I get a lot of crazy, uneducated comments, but that one is a top 5 all-time!
2. Yes, 12-21-12 is a very unusual date and “catchy” as you called it. Here is the hole in your “made it up” theory. The Mayans were not using the Gregorian calendar, they were… wait for it… using the Mayan calendar! The end of the long count calendar when correlated with our calendar is… 12-21-12. However, the Mayans did not know that.
I am sure it seems easier in your mind to blame it on a Mayan conspiracy, but you also think man has only walked the earth for 2011 years…

You forgot to mention that the post states that the earth has revolved 733,735 times around the sun in only 2,011 years. SMH
And lets not forget that not only the Mayan calendar esets itself for possibly a new begining in 2012 but the age of Aquarius starts on Dec. 21, 2012. So lets think of the positives, maybe 2012 will be a wake up call. Time for us to freshen up and start over. Like not polluting the earth and learning not to solve our problems with war. I bet 2012 will be the best year that will happen to us. I think when its all over and it passes, people are really going to notice how much they care about their lives and try to make it better.

Why do us humans always go for DRAMA? People always want to believe the worst!! The world will NOT end in December 2012. Yes, the Mayan calendar ends on this date, yes the Mayans were far advanced for their time but because they were advanced doesn’t mean to say that their calendar ends with DOOM! All it tells us is that they made a calendar to record a cycle. There was no need for them to create another calendar because the same cycle starts over again, so they would have used the same calendar again. If the Mayans were here today, the 21st of December 2012 would have been the start of a year long celebration of the end of one cycle and the beggining of a new one. I am a great believer in GOD and i believe that whatever GOD has planned for us is his own knowing! If the world was going to end at a certain time then rest assured GOD is the only being who knows when. Be happy and know that we are all going to grow old and decrepit!!! HAPPY DAYS

I dont think the world will end on 12-21-2012, but something will happen.. I belive the Mayans..they were a smart culture..but..the facts right..they predicted “everything” but they didnt predict there OWN end??
Ok, Kylee, I have not actually touched on this in my writing because I don’t want you all to think I am a crackpot (more than already, ha!), but what if the Mayan’s weren’t destroyed? I mean, where did they go? Some scientists say they died out by disease… some say war… some say they just packed up and moved – leaving their cities behind… others say they were taken.
One thing I KNOW: no one truly knows for certain what actually happened to the Mayans. These are just logical guesswork.
Now, the really fringe element says that the Mayans got their amazing mathematical and astrological knowledge from a super race – and that this super race took the Mayans with them when they left.

I head that there are a few surviving Mayan elders and they said they never predicted or meant to predict the end of the world or demise of species or anything like that, that just like many people have said here, it is just the end of a calendar.

Not sure that this is staged by scientists. If so, it was started about 60 years ago… unless you think it was Mayan scientists, in that case it has be thousands of years.
I personally am terrified of even the thought of the world ending so soon. But so many catrophic events have happened in the past and the world hasnt ended. The meldown in Japan way back when..and even though all this stuff is happening.. the biggest earthquake recorded in japan the tsunami and the nuclear reactor.. wow thats scary lol but things like this have happened in the past at least thats what i try to remind myself. It is a scary thought though. Just be prepared no matter what and live every day like its your last. Also Pray cause when the end does come, god wants to know we lived for him and ourselves.

I’d just like to say that I disagree with your statement – There is no danger of energy depletion for the Earth. The available energy is self generating, continuous and unlimited.
All energy available to us, even solar energy is limited and some, like oil, are non-renewable. They will get depleted some day! Maybe not in 2012 of course, but soon enough.
I really dont think the earth will end in the 2012, people is curious by nature, they like believing in superstitions and stuff, the same thing happened in 2000, everyone said the world would end at new year’s eve and nothing happened… i surely believe we are going to make it to 2013
i don’t think that earth will get to its end so early. no one can confirm anything about future. everything is just a prediction. both Mayans and Nostradamus just gave their predictions about future when they are not sure about themselves. they get extinct long before they predict about themselves so how can be their sayings so true. world can comes to its end surely, if we don’t start now to conserve our natural resources, most important is water.

In contrast, if the current were reversed, cold arctic waters would be carried south effecting weather and climate, and possibly creating another ice age.
Ice caps melting causes global water levels to rise. Graphs show the production of all that cold water will shift the ocean currents.
Once the Ocean currents are unstable, Global climate will change. It is speculated that this will cause enormous, and very hostile storms that will ravage the Earth and cause global temperatures to drop, thus bringing on a new Ice Age.
I dont think the World will end this coming 2012. I know that the ancient Mayans are amazing but there are no signs that it will happen. There are lots of prediction that the world will end but who knows when, right?
i didnt believe it was going to end until sunday when my friend and i were walking home from the shop and all of a sudden it got really hot and we couldnt brethe it was like there was a gas in the air.. or radiation or something. we literally felt like we were going to explode. luckily we were only a minutes run from the house because we both felt as if we were going to die. it was horrible. im now scared to go outside or even have a window open.
ive been doing alot of research and cant find any explaination for what we experienced. although i did find that apparently russia , sweeden and america are building shelters for 2012.. which until now i just thought was in the movie 2013. im not sure if i believe this but the more i look into it the more scared im becoming. until now i have been turning a blind eye to the changes in weather and the rumours of the government doing this and that , but now im starting to believe that maybe they want us to believe its only rumours. i just dont no what to believe and if anyone experienced what i experienced on sunday please let me know or even if you have a logical explaination that would be brilliant because its driving me mad. thank you

Anything Nostradamus predicted has been claimed after the event happened. His stories are so vague you can apply many things to mean the same thing. That is the number one reason why the world wont end in 2012. How good is his track record realistically?
You know how we will end? Human kind will destroy Earth… none of those things will happen… Science itself has no foundation or principality. By their own definition, science is no more a guess than it is a proven fact. Upon that, no one has any “3rd eye” to predict the end. No one will see it coming.
I know one thing if the world reaches some kind of demise it isn’t gonna have anything to do with any god.The theory of an actual god seems more far fetched than armageddon to me.If anything over population and maltreatment of the earth itself by man kind will cause the end of man.I had a religous friend make fun of me for believing in ghosts.He asked if i had ever witnessed a ghost.The answer was no,but when i asked him how many times he had seen his buddy god his blood boiled.In my opinion the whole god theory is a bunch of crap made up to control populations just like the government and police do today.No matter how full of crap the federal government is if its on the news you morons believe it.Kinda sad really.
I have to admit that after reading these comments that i feel a whole lot better about the 2012 ending. I still however am building a supply of essentials for maybe a three month supply just for what i believe will be natuaral disasters in the near future. After all there has many in the past few years and Im sure there will be alot more soon.
