Is May 21st, 2011, the end of the world or what?

Well, its May 21st and everyone is still here.  Apparently there is still time… no one is supposed to disappear yet until supper time.  I always eat late so I guess you have a few more hours.  The harbinger earthquake has been given a few different times too, but 6:00 pm seems to be a favorite.  Only 4 hours left here – but I guess California has over 7 hours.

May 21st 2011 is now just hours away.  Seeing all the comments below and also all the facebook “likes,” I am just marveled at the amount of exposure this one lone article has received.  I kept getting this question and I had avoided answering it on this site because I am trying just to focus on Mayan predictions .  However, my wife asked me about this date, my father has asked me about this date, and the emails kept on coming…  so here it is”

will the world end on may 21st 2011May 21st 2011 has nothing to do with the Mayans or the 2012 date at all.  May 21st 2011 is a date that has been made famous by a radio preacher from California.  Harold Camping, 89, first said that the world would end in 1994 – when that did not happen he said that he had made a mathematical error and that the new date would be May 21st 2011.

According to Harold, the world was created in 11,003 B.C. and then flooded 4990 B.C. Using these two dates, Harold has decided that the 23-year tribulation started in 1988. So that leaves 2011 as Judgment day.

However, is Harold claiming the world will end in on May 21st 2011?  Actually, no. Harold Camping believes that the rapture will occur on May 21st.  The actual end of the world, he predicts, is October 21st, 2011.

Do I agree with Harold Camping? No, of course not.  I hold no animosity for him, but I do not agree with him.

So, what about 2012?

Will the world end in 2012? The Mayan Long Count Calendar ends on December 21st 2012 (after over 5000 years). Does that mean the end of the world? No – although a lot of people do seem to think so. I think it will be the end of an age – but I also think the new age will start the next morning. Will this date be marked by a huge event of some kind? I don’t know that for sure either – lets wait and see.

Mayan Calendar Predictions for 2012

Mayan Calendar Predictions

Mayan Calendar Predictions

Do you think the world will be coming to a complete stop? That in December 2012 there will be cataclysmic and maybe even transformative events taking place? Let’s take a quick look through the calendar that has been used by the Mayans dating all the way back to the 6th century BC.

The Mayan calendar is made up of two calendars combined. The Tzolkin has 260 days and the Haab has 365 days, these two combined form synchronized cycles of 52 Haabs, known as the Calendar Rounds. The Haab and Tzolkin are usually run for short term cycles of 13 to 20 days. There is another form of calendar used to count longer cycles, this calendar is called the Long Round calendar. Between these two Mayan calendars there have been many predictions derived from their complex system.

There are also nine writings, which contribute to the predictions made of the Mayan calendar. These nine writings by the Mayans that combine Mayan and Spanish beliefs that come from the late 15th/16th centuries, these writings show the most astounding predictions of the calendar, and what will happen in the world on 2012. It is the Chilam Balam. According to the Mayan calendar, on December 21, 2012 the world will witness a coincidence of multiple heavenly bodies in the same celestial longitude, meaning that the winter solstice, the galactic equator and the elliptical equator should become aligned.

The Mayan calendar predicts that astronomical occurrences are predicted to take place on December 21, 2012, such as the sun being aligned directly with the center of the Milky Way, if this were to happen whatever type of energy channels from the Milky Way to earth will definitely be disrupted on December 21, 2012 due to the alignment. If the alignment of the sun with the center of the Milky Way happens, as the Mayan’s calendar predicts, this will be an event that will happen for the first time in 26,000 years. Astronomers’ have said that the Mayans are correct in the prediction of astronomical events maybe taking place on such date.

One other interpretation derived from a prediction of the Mayan calendar is that, there have been four past sun cycles which have vanished at the end of their cycle, causing great destruction to the world. According to the calendar we are at the moment within the fifth sun cycle, which started 5,106 years ago, this sun is predicted to come to an end on December 21, 2012, in which case it is believed that it shall cause destruction just like the previous four sun cycles ends have.

However, some scientists believe that the destruction caused might not be the end of the world as we know it, but perhaps a form of destruction that will cause catastrophes within the world. Therefore, what will happen on December 21, 2012, no one can really say, these are mere predictions being derived from ancient calendars, although this being said, the Mayan calendar has in fact surprisingly correctly asserted on many events happening right to the exact date! What do you think will happen in 2012?

Mayan 2012 Predictions

Mayan 2012 Predictions

Everyone is aware of the main Mayan prediction to supposedly happen in 2012. But, where did we get this idea that the world will end from? Why are we putting any form of faith into the Maya’s? Who even were they?

The Mayan civilization was the most recognizable and developing between 2500 B.C. and A.D. 250. After that, they lasted for roughly another 700 years before disappearing as part of a major force. However that’s not to say they all died out, there are still Mayans alive today.

The Ancient Maya civilization mainly shared a religious belief. They operated on several different languages however, and although sharing the same political belief, battles between cities were frequent. And like many ancient cultures, human sacrifice was not something rare in the Mayan culture.

The Mayan’s operated on three separate calendars, and their method of keeping track of time was very long and complicated. The three calendars were that of the Haab calendar, which was considered as the civil calendar, the Tzolkin, which was mainly used for ceremonial purposes, and then the Long Count. The Long Count is principally used for historical purposes, what with it being able to define any date, past or future. This is also the one that is considered to hold the predictions for the end of the world, 2012 (because after 5125 years, the Mayan Long Count calendar ends in December 2012).

The Mayan’s had an amazing understanding of mathematics, and astrology which is why faith is being put in them for these predictions. Supposedly, they predicted the invasion of foreigners into their land, in the correct year that the Spanish did actually invade. However, if this was true, why wouldn’t they have done something to stop it?

Legends have said that they predicted the 1st and 2nd world war, but there isn’t really anything to back this up and can easily be pushed straight out of logical thought. One thing that the Mayan Calendars have always predicted nearly to the second is every single lunar and solar eclipse. But does this really mean we should trust that the world will actually end in 2012?

What do you think about the Mayan calendar prediction?
