Supermoon: Did the Supermoon Cause the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami?
Supermoon Myanmar Earthquake 2011
Thursday, March 24th
A 6.8 magnitude earthquake has struck Myanmar near the China and Thailand border. This quake is only 5 days after the extreme Supermoon. Is the Myanmar earthquake related to the Supermoon?
Supermoon Arrives!

I took this photo tonight
Saturday, March 19th
Hello everyone, I am updating this article live at the Supermoon! What an awesome sight. The sky is so clear here.
I am glad that there have been no further earthquakes or tsunamis. So, was it a coincidence? If so, that is two major earthquakes and tsunamis right before a supermoon in the last 6 years. Still, I guess it can be a coincidence.
The next supermoon is April 18th, but the next extreme supermoon (like this one) is November 14th of 2016. Will there ever be another earthquake or tsunami right before a supermoon? If so, will the third such instance make a believer out of us all?

Did the Supermoon cause the Japan earthquakes?
I am getting tons of traffic and comments on the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. One of the most interesting questions is: Did the Supermoon cause the Japan earthquakes? Whenever I get a really interesting comment or question like this one, I try to write a post about it as quickly as possible.
So I figure that there are really 3 basic things that need to be addressed:
- What is the Supermoon?
- When is the Supermoon?
- Did the Supermoon cause the earthquakes?
What is a Supermoon?
Simply put, a Supermoon (or super moon) is when the moon is closer to the earth than normal. Astrologer Richard Nolle actually predicted that the next Supermoon would cause… wait for it… earthquakes and tsunamis among other natural disasters. Most people laughed at him – of course, they are not laughing now.
Nolle has actually called the next Supermoon an “Extreme Super Moon” because it will be that much closer to the earth. As close as it has been since 1992.
When is the Supermoon?
The next Supermoon is actually only a few days away – March 19th. The moon will be full and extremely close to the earth. The moon actually gets close to the earth several times each year – just not THIS close. The moon only gets this close every 20 years or so: 1992, 1974, 1955.
Did the Supermoon cause the earthquakes and tsunami?
The experts say no.
I say that there was another undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean on December 26th of 2004. The resulting tsunami killed over 200,000 people in several countries. The catch? Another Supermoon (just not as close, not an extreme Supermoon) occurred on January 10th 2005 – just 2 weeks later.
Here we are just over a week away from this extreme Supermoon and we have one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history.
So, do you think there is a connection? I will tell you this: anyone who completely denies the connection outright is a fool. Do you want to call it a coincidence and say that the Supermoon hasn’t occurred yet or isn’t at its strongest and therefore could not be the culprit? Well, you go right ahead.
Some people have asked about any connection between the writings of Nostradamus and the Supermoon. Nostradamus does not specifically talk about a super moon, but he certainly describes images that have been translated to mean rogue moons, comets, or asteroids: Nostradamus and 2012.

someone told me that they think that the tsunami was because of a old under water missel that whent off right befor the supermoon. i think thats is not the truth
SUPERMOON caused Myanmar earth quake!!!
supermoon and the prediction of a 7.0 monster that really did happened yesterday that hit Myanmar
Hi everyone,
I took a picture of the night sky, but I used my Droid Incredible phone so it is not astronomer quality.
I also took a 10 second video and that is on youtube: Live Supermoon Video
I dont belive in this non sense, but if it does happen am headding for the hills
I think that anything related to the Supermoon has already happened. The pull is still getting stronger, but in 2005 everything happened about 2 weeks prior to the supermoon.
If the moon is the reason of tsunami and E.Q. in Japan, why it happen once, think of it. If its true it will always has a tsunami all over the world.
I think the Supermoon could have HELPED cause the earthquake. I did not say that it caused it entirely. Did you read how the 2005 Tsunami was just prior to another supermoon. Anyway, thanks for your comment. Also, I read your article too at blogspot, it was very good.
Very interesting…..Looks like we are in for more than the usual hangover after St Patricks day!!
I know, right? I have one person who says that if the Supermoon doesn’t blow up the world then I have to apologize to the world for my lies. It is stuff like that that makes me need a beer – green or not! For those of you wondering, no I have never claimed anything about the Supermoon destroying anything.
Some interesting Historical Disasters
Japan, 1896- Tsunami 28,000 killed
Italy 1915 – Earthquake killed 30,000
China 1920- Earthquake killed 200,000
China 1927 -EQ Killed 200,000
Turkey 1939- Earthquake killed 32,000
So there are no real significant relations to the Moon phasing. That I can see anyway.
I don’t mean that the moon causes them all – I just mean that it might have had an effect on this one. Maybe not, too.
Here is where the chart is from timeanddate.com
CC,
Yes, that is where the chart is from.
I believe that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Question from me is that if these Quakes / Tsunamies occured before the the Moon was closest to Earth, and from above it will be the 19th Mar 11. Are we expecting further more devistating effects?
Does anyone have a link to the table above?
Hi Vladimir,
There was no further earthquakes in 2004/2005 after that big tsunami, but I guess we just do not know.
The chart can be found by googling “Japan moon rising and setting.”
Check out the times for the moon, and the distances. Notice over the next few days the moon will get about 30,000km or about 10% closer, not the 1% discussed by dismissive scientists. Unless I am misreading the figures.
Also check where the moon was when the quake struck, nearly at noon over Tokyo.
Also check your local tide chart and see how high the tides are.
Perhaps the pressure has been building up in the planet’s crust, but also perhaps a closer moon is enough to be a catalyst to set off reactions. It seems to be enough to cause big tides.
@bill
Thank you for that chart!
Hi Jonathan,
Honestly I am not certain, but I do not dismiss the idea. I believe in coincidence, but that 2004 tsunami was also just before another supermoon too – and that was a minor supermoon. This one is much closer. So, I believe it is possible.
