6.8 Myanmar Earthquake Near China and Thailand

myanmar earthquake 2011March 24th 2011 – The US Geological survey has said that a powerful 6.8 magnitude (originally reported as a 7.0) earthquake has struck Myanmar near the borders of China and Thailand.  This is following a March 10th earthquake that hit China.

Myanmar (Burma) has had its fair share of disasters these last few years.  100,000 were killed by an amazing cyclone in 2008 and another powerful cyclone in 2010 left about 70,000 homeless.  It seems that every few months Myanmar is hit with another disaster.

So far, due to its location, there is only 1 reported death by a collapsed roof in Thailand.  Because this quake was so shallow, less than 10 miles deep, the damage was more severe over a larger area.  Fortunately the epicenter was in a sparsely populated region.

(Update: March 25th – death toll has risen to 75 as of Friday afternoon for the 2011 Myanmar earthquake.)

There was an aftershock that reached 4.8 magnitude a short while after the 6.8.  The 6.8 earthquake was even felt in Bangkok which is almost 500 miles away.

No Tsunami After Myanmar Earthquake

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says that a tsunami is not expected.  The Myanmar earthquake 2011 video below by CNN explains that the earthquake was far enough inland that it will not produce a tsunami.

The Japan earthquake 2 weeks ago resulted in an enormous amount of damage and loss of life. It is fortunate that this earthquake will not create a similar wave.

CNN compares this 2011 Myanmar earthquake to the size and force of the 7.0 Haiti earthquake and tsunami that resulted in 200,000 deaths.

2011 Myanmar Earthquake No Relation To Japan Earthquake

All news media are reporting that this earthquake is not related to the Japan earthquake from March 11th.  They were on separate fault lines.

The Japan earthquake was much larger – a 9.0 magnitude – and the epicenter was offshore resulting in a disastrous tsunami.

There is a tremendous amount of Internet buzz going around about a California earthquake prediction that is related to the Chile, New Zealand, and Japan quakes.  Therefore, many people were concerned that this earthquake could possibly be related to that prediction.

Supermoon and the Myanmar Earthquake 2011

One extreme point of interest for this site is that the earthquake occurred merely 5 days after the extreme Supermoon on March 19th.  I am not saying that they are absolutely related. It certainly could be a coincidence.

However, I have already received many emails about a possible Supermoon connection and so I  know my visitors are interested in the theory.

This is not the first Myanmar Supermoon connection either.  A Mizzima.com report out of New Delhi says that as many as 4,000 fishermen from Myanmar are reported missing and presumed drowned after unusual storms from March 14th to the 17th.  Many are relating these heavy storms to the approaching Supermoon.

So is is the Supermoon responsible for the Myanmar 2011 earthquake?  Do you believe in a Supermoon Myanmar Earthquake connection?  I have already received at least one comment saying yes
