3.8 Magnitude Earthquake in San Francisco California

California Earthquake Prediction 2011

Anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake

April 18th 2011

The small “rattler” earthquake did little or no damage today, but it did scare the hell out of a lot of people in the San Fransisco area.

There has been a mad rush of interest and fear regarding a prediction of a large California earthquake for late March of this year.  Fortunately, no such earthquake occurred.  However, with the recent Japan and New Zealand earthquakes still readily on the mind, many people are still afraid.

I can imagine that living along the San Andreas Fault is a bit nerve rattling on an ordinary day.  However, today is an especially ominous day:

The Anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake

The 2011 Earthquake was only a 3.8 magnitude.

The 1906 Earthquake and fire resulted in approximately 3000 deaths.

The 2011 Earthquake has no reported injuries, fortunately.

The 1906 Earthquake resulted in approximately $400M in damage (nearly $10B today).

The 2011 Earthquake is expected to have caused little or no damage.

2011 California Earthquake Prediction

The idea here was that there have been 3 major earthquakes on 3 corners of the tectonic plate:

  1. February 2010, 8.8 earthquake in Chile
  2. September 2010, 7.1 earthquake in New Zealand (followed by 6.3 this February)
  3. March 2011, 9.0 earthquake in japan

The 4th corner of this tectonic plate is the San Andreas Fault underneath San Francisco California.
